Victory eludes the Jets on Senior Day

WICHITA, Kan. - The Jets welcomed Northeastern State to Wilkins Field for their final contest of the season.  Sunday afternoon also marked Senior Day for the 4 seniors who were playing in their final home game at Newman.

Prior to kick off a ceremony was held to honor Luke Mills, Matthew Roberts, Cole Thompson and Jose Trejo.  The four were recognized with their teammates by their side.

The game began with lots of fireworks.  At 2:24, NSU opened the scoring taking an early 1-0 lead.  The Jets responded and took the lead with two goals just under two minutes apart.  Joao Moreira continued his scoring streak at 25:24 followed by another Jet goal by Felix tellez Ramirez at 27:09.

The second half became all about NSU and whistles.  The Riverhawks evened the game early in the second half, but Newman was quick to regain control when 1:04 after the tying goal, Joao Moreira pushed his second goal through.

With the Jets leading 3-2, NSU began to shift their attack and scratched across another game tying goal to make it 3-3 with just over 30 minutes to play.  The two teams traded offensive chances until 71:33 when a hand ball led to an NSU penalty kick.  Newman goalkeeper Juan Carlos Cordova dove left in anticipation of the kick, but was unable to block the shot.  Cordova finished with 10 saves in 89:56 of play.

The game saw 6 cautions for Newman, 2 for NSU and 3 ejections for the Jets.  All of the cards came in the second half following NSU's goal that made the game 3-3.  With the Jets' loss 4-3 to the Riverhawks, Newman finishes the 2021 campaign at 1-15-1.
