Pittsburg, Kan. - Newman traveled to Pittsburg State to open up conference play for the 2021-22 season. The Jets fell to the Gorillas 88-50 Wednesday evening in Pittsburg.
Wednesday was the Jets' first conference matchup on the young season. With the result, Newman falls to 2-5 (0-1 MIAA) while Pittsburg State advances to 6-1 (1-0 MIAA).
In the first half Newman fell behind early. Coach Drew Johnson called a timeout at 7:25 to help his team regain their composure. Every time the Jets seemed to be clawing their way back, the Gorillas shooting heated up, closing out both first half periods with 3+ minute scoring runs.
In the second half, the Gorillas shot lights out going 7-11 from long range. The Jets were unable to surmount a comeback although scoring inside opened up for the Jets. Pitt State went home winners 88-50.
Faith Mason-Vestal has played in 5 games this season and has double-figures in each. The Senior finished Wednesday's contest with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Laura Bello continues her solid bench performances leading Newman with 14 points off the bench. Tiffany Dortland scored just three points on the night, but picked up 4 assists to lead the Jets.
Up next is a trip to Joplin, Missouri to take on the Lions of Missouri Southern on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 PM.
