Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense nearly completes the comeback in Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. - Newman visited Missouri Southern for their only matchup of the 2021-22 season.  The Jets fell 59 to 51 on Saturday afternoon in Joplin.

The Jets fell behind by as many as 17 points on the day.  A resilient defensive effort kept Drew Johnson's team in the game.  Newman held the Lions to 25% shooting from behind the line.

Newman went into the halftime break trailing by 8 after slashing the Lion lead nearly in half with an 11-2 run over the final 3:13 over quarter number 2 including a 7-0 run in the last 1:25.  Newman's defense stifled MSSU's offensive attack as the scoreless streak for the Lions continued to the 2:55 mark of the third quarter.

Amoni White's jump shot with 1:23 remaining in the third brought the Jets within one, but that was the closest Newman could get to the Lions.  White finished with 15 points and 4 assists in 32 minutes off the bench.  Tiffany Dortland tallied 10 points and led the team with 9 rebounds.

The Women's Basketball team returns home for a double dip of conference games in Fugate Gymnasium with a battle against Emporia State slated for 5:30 PM on Wednesday December 8 and then the Washburn Ichabods come to town on a Youth Sports Saturday with tip-off set for 1:30 PM.
