WICHITA, Kan. - Newman hosted the Emporia State Hornets Wednesday night in Fugate Gymnasium. The Jets played stretches of very good basketball, yet one period of play ultimately decided the game as Newman fell 71-57.
Newman now sits at 2-7 (0-3 MIAA) while the Hornets advance to 6-3 (1-2 MIAA). The Jets have seen some bright spots early in conference play, but are looking to put 40 minutes together.
The game began with a 9-0 run by Newman's offense which was finding the open man with ease.
Britney Ho converted on her first three field goals on a night that eventually led to her season-high of 17 points. The Jets continued their run with a
Tiffany Dortland 3-pointer before an Emporia State timeout curbed the Jets momentum. Newman led 13-12 after a period.
At the halftime break the Jets sat in good position to contend with the Hornets all night. ESU brought a different look that Newman was unable to make adjustments on the fly. Emporia State gathered a healthy lead in the game outscoring the Jets 30-11 in the third frame thanks in large part to a 12-0 run in the early part of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Newman showed what they learned. Never backing down,
Drew Johnson's team got back to their early scoring ways with a 25-16 advantage in the scoring calling.
Newman bigs were very good again with a 16-23 night from the field. Teh combination of
Britney Ho,
Faith Mason-Vestal and
Laura Bello did their work, but Ho and Mason-Vestal carried the load for Newman.
Britney Ho had 17 points and 3 boards, while
Faith Mason-Vestal went for a calm 10 and 7.
Tiffany Dortland added 12 points and 4 assists and
Sydney Nilles scored 4 points while assisting on 8 buckets for Newman.
The Jets return to action Saturday afternoon against Washburn. Tip-off is set for 1:30 PM and it will be another Youth Sports Saturday presented by Dr. Brennen Lucas of AOA in Fugate Gymnasium.
