WICHITA, Kan. - Newman hosted the Washburn Ichabods Saturday afternoon. It was the Jets' final home contest of 2021. A sluggish third quarter dampered the afternoon as the Jets fell 51-40.
Newman hits the road with a 2-8 (0-4 MIAA) mark, while Washburn picked up its first conference win sitting at 2-7 (1-3 MIAA) currently. A less than ideal start for the Jets in MIAA play is not all bad. Some bright spots continued to shine through for Newman on Saturday.
Post play for the Jets worked to the tune of 12 points and 3 rebounds for
Britney Ho, while
Faith Mason-Vestal had 5 points 4 rebounds and 4 rejections of Ichabod shots.
Laura Bello went for a casual 8 points and 6 boards to lead the Jets on the glass.
The Jets defense was stout collecting 9 steals and 5 blocks all while holding Washburn to 51 points. The only issue for Newman was that the offense could not get going out of the gate in the third quarter. Newman shot 2-12 from the field and in the second half had just 6 points in the paint.
After the game,
Drew Johnson said "We've got a ton going right for us, the next step for this team is to put an entire 40 minutes together."
Up next, the Jets travel to Kearney, Nebraska to take on the Lopers Friday evening. This will be the first of two road games for the Jets before a Christmas break.
