Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Newman unable to match nationally ranked UNK

Kearney, Neb. - Newman traveled to face off #12/#7 nationally ranked Nebraska-Kearney.  The Jets were seeking their first conference win of the season while the Lopers were looking to keep their unblemished conference record.  The Jets dropped the game 81-48.

Newman's loss puts their record at 2-9 (0-5 MIAA).  The Jets will take on Fort Hays State Sunday to continue their quest to turn the tide.  The Lopers advance to 9-1 (4-0 MIAA) with the win.  The Lopers are in position to continue climbing the rankings with their win.

The Jets started the night with a 2-0 lead thanks to an elbow jumper from Sydney Nilles.  The Lopers responded, taking the lead quickly and did not look back, leading 23-6 after one frame.  Across the first two quarters the Jets were held scoreless for over 5 minutes.

Laura Bello put up 8 first half points to lead the Jets through 20 minutes.  Scoring from 8 different Jets helped Newman hold the Lopers to a 45-22 lead at the half.

In the second half, Newman did what they could to hold UNK back, but 5 double-figure scorers put the Jets away.  Newman was led with 12 points from Laura Bello who continued her torrid scoring in her Freshman season.  Carissa Beck added 10 points.  Despite the scoring efforts, Jets ultimately fell 81-48.

Up next, Newman will travel to Hays, Kansas to take on the number 5 nationally ranked team, the Fort Hays State Tigers.  It will be teams' first matchup of the season and the Sunday affair will wrap up the 2021 part of the Jets' 2021-22 season.
