Jets downed by #11 Tigers 68-50

HAYS, Kan. – The Jets kicked off their road trip against top 15 opponents with the first stop coming against the #11 ranked Fort Hays State Tigers inside Gross Memorial Coliseum. Newman would take a lead in the second quarter after falling behind early before Fort Hays State would pull away late for a 68-50 victory.
 
Fort Hays State would come out firing in the first quarter as they would score on three of their first four possessions to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Newman would outscore the Tigers over the next three minutes as they would cut the FHSU lead down to just four points, 10-6. The Jets would trail 18-11 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Jets would start the second quarter outscoring the tigers 13-5 behind two three point baskets by Makayla Hayes to make the score 24-23 in favor of Newman. The Tigers would take the lead back on the ensuing possession and would keep it around four points until they would close out the half on an 11-3 scoring run to take a 39-29 lead into the intermission.
 
Fort Hays State would continue to pull away from Newman in the third quarter as they would outscore the Jets 15-9 in the quarter to take a 54-39 lead into the final quarter of play. Both teams would play the fourth quarter pretty evenly as Fort Hays State would take down Newman with a final score of 68-50.
 
The Jets were led in scoring by Makayla Hayes with 14 points as Sydney Nilles would add 11 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss. The Tigers were led in scoring by Whitney Randall with 16 points and 9 rebounds. The Jets would shoot 17 of 59 from the field for 28.8 percent and 6 of 28 from three for 21 percent. The Tigers would shoot 24 of 62 from the floor for 38.7 percent and 6 of 20 from behind the three point arc for 30 percent.
 
Newman will be back in action on Saturday, February 6th at 2:00 pm as they take on #12 Nebraska Kearney on the road.
