Softball Loses Both to Northeastern State

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Newman Softball team took on the Northeastern State Riverhawks in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The Jets would drop both games to the Riverhawks losing the first contest 7-1 and the second 9-4.
 
The Jets would get the scoring started in the top of the first when Taylor Ullery would hit a solo homerun to left center putting the Jets up 1-0. The Riverhawks would tie it up in the third inning with a sacrifice fly. Northeastern State would blow the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth when they would score six runs taking a 7-1 lead. Newman would get runners on in the top of the seventh, but would be unable to drive them in as they would fall to NSU 7-1 in game one.
 
In game two, the Riverhawks would get the scoring started in the bottom of the first when they would manufacture two runs. The Jets would plate two runs in the top of the second when Mackenzie Anderson would hit a double to left center scoring Shanda Cox and Kaitlyn Praught. Northeastern State would answer right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead back 4-2. NSU would score one run in the third inning and two more in the fourth to jump out to a 7-2 lead.
 
Newman would score two runs in the top of the sixth inning when Lauren Kuhrt would triple to left center to score Emma Eck. Kaitlyn Praught would then reach on an error by the third baseman that would allow Kuhrt to score cutting the Riverhawk lead to 7-4. In the bottom half of the inning, the Riverhawks would get both runs back to extend their lead back to 9-4. Northeastern State would shut the Jets down in the seventh to win the game 9-4.
 
The Jets will be back in action on Saturday, March 20 as they host Pittsburg State in an MIAA Conference doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 pm.
