Jets Drop Two to the Rangers

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman softball team hosted Northwestern Oklahoma State in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The Jets would drop the first contest 9-3
 
In game one, the Rangers would pull ahead early as they would strike for four runs to open up the game. Northwestern Oklahoma State would plate one more run in the top of the third and three runs in the fourth to take a 8-0 lead. In the bottom half of the fourth, Newman would get on the board when Lauren Kuhrt would hit a double to center scoring Lauren Kwak from second base to make the score 8-1. The Jets would plate two more runs in the fifth, Emma Eck would drive in Anissa Ramos. Later in the inning, Eck would steal second and Paige Wallace would score on the throw to second to make the score 8-3. The Rangers would add one more in the 7th, to extend their lead to 9-3. Newman would get runners on in the 7th, but would be unable to capitalize as they would drop game one of the doubleheader 9-3.
 
Lauren Kuhrt would go 2 for 3 with an RBI and a double. Emma Eck would go 2 for 4 with an RBI and Paige Wallace would go 2 for 4 with a run scored.
 
The Rangers would start game two off by scoring three runs on three hits and one error to jump out to another early lead on the Jets. Newman would plate a run in the bottom of the third inning when Emma Eck would smack a double that drove in Taylor Ullery making the score 3-1 for the Rangers. NWOSU would answer back in the top of the fourth when they would bring one run across to push their lead back to three runs, 4-1.
 
Anissa Ramos would get the big fifth inning started for the Jets with a walk. Paige Wallace would follow it up with a double to put runners on second and third for Taylor Ullery. Ullery would smack a two RBI double to left field to put Newman within a run of the Rangers 4-3. After a pitching change, Emma Eck would walk and Lauren Kwak would hit a single to the pitcher that would load the bases for Lauren Kuhrt. Kuhrt would reach on a fielder's choice that would score Ullery, Kwak would be out at second base. With runners on second and third, Shanda Cox would drop down a bunt that would bring in Eck and advance Kuhrt to third. Cox's RBI bunt, put the Jets ahead 5-4. During Megan Walz's at bat, Cox would steal second and the Ranger catcher would make a throwing error to third base allowing Kuhrt to score putting the Jets up 6-4. Walz would then single through the right side bringing in Cox to score the sixth run of the inning for the Jets and push their lead to 7-4.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Rangers would plate three runs to tie the game up at 7-7. Newman would be unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunity in the bottom half of the inning as we would head to extras. In the first extra frame, Northwestern Oklahoma State would plate two runners to take a 9-7 lead into the bottom half of the inning. Newman would be held scoreless in the extra inning as the Rangers would hold on for the come from behind 9-7 victory.
 
Taylor Ullery would go 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's and a double. Emma Eck would go 3 for 4 with an RBI and a double. Shanda Cox would go 3 for 3 with an RBI and a triple.
 
The Jets will be back in action on Friday, March 5th as they host the Missouri Southern Lions with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
