WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Softball team hosted the Missouri Southern Lions for an MIAA Conference doubleheader Friday. The Jets would take game one 7-5, before falling to the Lions in game tow 9-2.
The Lions would strike first in game one as they would plate two runs in the first. Newman would respond in the bottom of the second inning when
Anissa Ramos would drive in
Kaitlyn Praught and
Lauren Kuhrt with a double to center field. Newman would add to their lead in the third inning when
Shanda Cox would reach on an error that would score Praught. Ramos would then pick up two more RBI's as she would smack a single to right center that would score
Mackenzie Anderson and
Shanda Cox. The Lions would plate two runs in the fourth on a two run homerun to left field.
Missouri Southern would tie the game up in the top of the fifth inning and the Jets would respond in the bottom half of the inning when
Taylor Ullery would drive in
Paige Wallace making the score 6-5 in favor of NU. Newman would add a cushion run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cox would reach on a bunt single that would score L. Kuhrt. The Jets would hold on to secure their first MIAA Conference win of the season 7-5 over the Lions.
Ramos went 2 for 5 with 4 RBI's. Ullery went 2 for 2 with two doubles. L. Kuhrt would go 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a triple. Cox would go 1 for 4 with two RBI's.
The Lions would strike first again in game two, plating three runs in the second inning. Newman would respond with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when
Anissa Ramos would drive a double into left field scoring
Jaleigh Conkle and
Mackenzie Anderson. Missouri Southern would plate one run in the third, two runs in the fourth, and a run in each of the remaining innings while holding the Jets scoreless. The Lions would take down the Jets 9-2 in game two.
Ramos would go 3 for 3 in the contest with two RBI's and a double. Ullery would go 2 for 4 with a double and Conkle would go 2 for 3.
The Jets will be back in action next Friday, March 12
th as they travel to Claremore, Okla. to take on the Rogers State Hillcats with first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
