WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Newman Baseball team opened up their 2021 season this weekend with a three game series with #20 Central Missouri. The Jets would drop all three games to the Mules, 14-5, 13-0 and 11-6.
In game one, UCM would strike early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Newman would respond with a run in the top of the second before Central Missouri would plate three more to jump out to a 6-1 lead after two innings of play. The Jets would cut into the Mules lead in the top of the third inning when
Devin Beard would start the inning with a single to right field. Enzo Bonventure would follow that up with a double down the left field line. With Beard on third and Bonventure on second,
Mitchell Austin would hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
Will Jordan would come up next and hit a double down the first base line that would score Bonventure.
Jake Angelico would follow up Jordan's double with a triple to center field.
After Newman would cut the Central Missouri lead to two, 6-4. The Mules would extend their lead in the next half inning to 7-4. After holding Newman scoreless in the fourth, UCM would plate three more runs in the inning to push their lead to 10-4. The Jets would get one run in the sixth on a Zach Hargrove inside the park homerun. The Mules would plate two runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to extend their lead to the eventual final score 14-5.
In game two, the Mules would once again get the scoring started. This time putting up nine runs on the Jets in the first inning. UCM would hold Newman scoreless in the contest, as their starter would throw a complete game one hitter as Central Missouri would coast to a 13-0 win after their big first inning.
In the series finale, the Mules would once again put up a crooked number in the first inning, this time a five. Newman would cut into the UCM lead in the fourth as they would score a run on a sacrifice fly from Bonventure that would score
Tyler Push who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. Central Missouri would respond in the bottom half scoring two runs to push their lead to six, 7-1. Newman would score another run in the fifth inning when a
Kellan Landstad single through the right side would score Jordan. The Jets would score two more in the sixth to cut into the Mules lead even more. UCM would respond in the bottom half stretching their 7-4 lead to an 11-4 lead. Newman would score get things going in the ninth inning, but would only be able to plate two runs as they would fall in the finale 11-6.
Jake Angelico would lead the Jets offense on the weekend going 4 for 9 with a double, a triple and an RBI.
Will Jordan would go 3 for 8 with 4 runs scored, two doubles, and an RBI while drawing three walks.
The Jets will be back in action on Tuesday, March 9 and Wednesday, March 10 as they host Wayne State in a single game each day with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
