MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Newman Softball team kept their road trip in Northwest Missouri on Saturday as they took on Northwest Missouri State for an MIAA Conference doubleheader. The Bearcats would take game one 3-2 and would walkoff the Jets in game two 4-3.
Northwest would get the scoring started in game one with an RBI single to take a 1-0 leading after the opening inning. The Bearcats would push two more runs across in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Newman would get things going in the top of the fifth inning as
Mackenzie Anderson and
Lauren Kuhrt would execute a double steal that would see Anderson scoring and Kuhrt reaching second base safely.
Anissa Ramos would then drive Kuhrt in to put Newman down by just one run, 3-2.
Emma Eck would get on base in the top half of the sixth, but the Jets would be unable to drive her in. The Bearcats would close out the game in the seventh inning sitting the Newman batters down in order to secure the 3-2 victory in game one.
Game two would start the same way as game one with the Bearcats breaking the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the first with a run. The Newman offense would respond immediately as L. Kuhrt would draw the bases loaded walk to tie the contest at 1-1. The Jets would take the lead in the top half of the third inning when
Kaitlyn Praught would drive in Tayler Ullery to put NU up 2-1. The Jets would push one more run across in the top of the fifth inning when
Paige Wallace would bring in Ullery with a sacrifice fly to centerfield making the NU lead 3-1. The Bearcats would come up in the bottom of the seventh inning and drive in two runs to take the 4-3 victory over the Jets.
Newman will be back in action on Friday, April 16
th as they continue their road trip in Topeka as they take on the Washburn Ichabods in a doubleheader with first pitch set for 3:00 pm.
