EMPORIA, Kan. – The Newman Softball team took on Emporia State Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets would take game one 16-8 and game two 10-2.
Emporia State would jump out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings. Newman would get on the board in the top of the third inning when on a RBI double by
Anissa Ramos and a two run homerun by
Taylor Ullery. The Hornets would respond immediately by plating three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 9-3 lead after three innings. Ramos would pick up two more RBI's in the following inning, before Ullery would drive her in with another two run homerun.
Emma Eck followed Ullery up with a solo shot to left field to get the Jets within one run, 9-8. It would be all Hornets from there on out as they would put up four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the 16-8 win in game one.
Newman would score first in game two as Ramos would drive in her fourth RBI of the day with a single through the left side. ESU would respond in the bottom of the opening frame with two runs of their own to take the lead 2-1. Newman would tie the contest in the second on a
Shanda Cox RBI. The Hornets would score three runs in the third and one in the fourth all on homeruns to take a 6-2 lead. Emporia State would score three more runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth on their way to a 10-2 victory.
The Jets will be back in action tomorrow at 12:00 and 2:00 pm as they take on Washburn in Topeka.
