PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team finished up their road trip with a stop in Pittsburg to take on the Gorillas on Saturday and Sunday. The Gorillas would take game one 13-3 in 7 innings, the Jets would take game two 12-8, and in game three the Gorillas would take the series with a 5-1 victory.
In game one, the contest would remain scoreless until the top of the 4
th inning, when
Jon Coufal, with two people on base, crushed a homerun to right field to give the Jets a 3-0 lead. The Gorillas would respond in the bottom of the 4
th scoring two runs to cut the Jets lead to 3-2. The Gorillas would take the lead in the bottom of the 5
th inning scoring three runs to take a 5-3 lead over Newman. Pittsburg State would add on to their lead in the bottom of the 6
th scoring four runs to lead 9-3. PSU would add the finishing touches to game one scoring four more runs in the bottom of the 7
th to take game one by a final score of 13-3.
In game two, the scoring would begin in the bottom of the first as the Gorillas would push across one run to take an early 1-0 lead. The Jets would quickly respond in the top of the 2
nd scoring five runs, including a grand slam by
Zack Hargrove, to give the Jets a 5-1 lead. Pittsburg State would cut into the Jets lead in the bottom of the 3
rd to make the score 5-2. Newman would add two runs to their lead in the top of the 4
th inning to take a 7-2 lead. The Jets would once again add to their lead in the top of the 5
th when
Max Bajza would extended the Jets lead to 10-2 with a three run homerun. The Gorillas would respond in the bottom of the 5
th with a grand slam 10-6. Pitt State would score one more run in the bottom of the 6
th inning to make the score 10-7. A sac fly by
Daniel Quintanilla would give the Jets a 11-7 lead. After PSU would plate one more run, NU would add one run in the top of the 9
th with a RBI double by Quintanilla to give the Jets a 12-8 lead heading into the final half.
Luke Thoreson would shut the Gorillas down in the bottom of the 9
th as the Jets would take game two by a final score of 12-8.
In the series finale, the contest would remain scoreless until the top of the 3
rd inning when Coufal would triple to centerfield bringing in
Hayden VanDePol giving the Jets an early 1-0 lead. The Gorillas would take the lead in the bottom of the 3
rd scoring two runs. Pittsburg State would add to their lead in the bottom of the 4
th with a RBI single to lead 3-1. PSU would add one more in the top of the 6
th to extend their lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the 8
th Pittsburg State would plate one more on their way to a game three win, 5-1.
The Jets will return home to host Rogers State for a three game set starting Friday, April 23 with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.
