WICHITA, Kan. – On a warm and windy Friday afternoon in Wichita, the Newman Jets continued their homestand as #17 Central Oklahoma came to town for an MIAA Conference doubleheader. The Jets were able to win game one in dramatic fashion 8-7, but would fall in game two 7-1.
The Bronchos would start the scoring off in game one scoring one in the top of the first after a Jets miscue to take the early 1-0 lead. The Jets would respond in the bottom of the first starting with a RBI double by
Anissa Ramos, and a 2 RBI Single by
Emma Eck that gave the Jets a 3-1 lead. Central Oklahoma would tie the game in the top of the 2
nd scoring two runs to make the score 3-3. The Bronchos would take the lead in the top of the third with a RBI double making the score 4-3. UCO would add to their lead in the top of the 4
th with a homerun to extend their lead to 5-3.
The Jets would respond in the bottom of the 5
th inning taking the lead back after scoring three runs 6-5. The Bronchos would tie the game again in the top of the 6
th inning with a homerun. The Jets would take back the lead in the bottom of the 6
th as
Paige Wallace would double to left field scoring
Kaitlyn Praught and giving Newman the 7-6 lead going into the final inning. UCO would tie the game in the top of the 7
th with a RBI single forcing Newman to come to the plate in the bottom half. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7
th inning and a runner on 2
nd base, Ramos would hit a pop fly in the infield, but the Broncho second basemen would drop the fly ball that would allow
Shanda Cox to score from second base giving the Jets the 8-7 walkoff win.
This was Newman's first win against a ranked opponent since joining the MIAA Conference.
Three Jets hitters would have a multi-hit game,
Lauren Kuhrt 3-5,
Kaitlyn Praught 2-4, and
Paige Wallace 3-4 with 2 RBI in the Jets upset win over #17 Central Oklahoma.
In Game two, the Bronchos again would start the scoring off scoring one in the top of the second inning to gain the early 1-0 advantage. The Bronchos would add to their lead in the top of 3
rd inning with a homerun extending their lead to 2-0. The Bronchos would tack on a couple more runs in the top of the 5
th inning with a homerun to double their lead, 4-0. The Jets would cut into the Bronchos lead in the bottom of the 6
th when
Taylor Ullery crushed her 8
th homerun of the season making the score 4-1. The Bronchos would add three runs in the top of the 7
th making their lead 7-1. The Jets would have one more chance in the bottom of the 7
th, but would get nothing going as the Bronchos would take game 2 by a final score of 7-1.
Praught and Kwak each had 2 hits in the Jets Loss.
