Softball Drops Doubleheader to Fort Hays State

WICHITA, Kan. – The Newman Softball team took on Fort Hays State to begin their final weekend of regular season MIAA Conference play. The Jets would drop game one to the Tigers 6-2, before dropping game two 9-1.

The Tigers would strike first in game one with a solo homerun in the fourth inning. FHSU would expand their lead in the ensuing inning as they would put up three runs to lead 4-0. Emma Eck would follow up an Anissa Ramos single with a homerun to left center field to cut the Tigers lead in half. Fort Hays State would answer right back with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh inning, before shutting Newman down in the bottom half to take the 6-2 victory in game one.

Game two would once again see the Tigers strike first with a run in the top of the second inning. They would follow that run up with another run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead after three innings. FHSU would push their lead to five with a three run fourth inning. Newman would score their only run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single from Kaitlyn Praught that scored Paige Wallace. Fort Hays State would plate four runs in the fifth inning to put the pressure on the Jets to score to avoid the run rule. Shanda Cox reached on a bunt single and would find her way to second, but Newman wouldn't be able to drive her in as the Tigers would take game two 9-1.

The Jets will be back in action tomorrow, May 1 at 12:00 and 2:00 as they take on Nebraska Kearney in their final regular season contests of the year. Senior day activities will take place at 11:40 am.
