HAYS, Kan. – The Newman Baseball team would take to the road for their final series of the 2021 season as they took on Fort Hays State. The Jets would drop the first two contests by scores of 5-4 and 8-3 before taking the series finale 5-3 in 10 innings.
In game one, the Jets would jump out to an early 4-1 after four complete innings of play. The Tigers defense would shut the Jets down in the final five innings as their offense would get a run in the sixth inning, two in the seventh and a go ahead run in the eighth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
The Tigers would strike first in game two of the series, with two runs in the second inning and another run in the third. Trailing 3-0, Newman would get two runs back in the fifth inning on a two-run homerun to right field from
Daniel Quintanilla. Fort Hays State would explode for five runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning as they would push their lead up to 8-2. The Jets would get one run back in the top of the eighth inning, but wouldn't be able to get it any closer as the Tigers would take game one of the Saturday doubleheader 8-3.
In the series finale and the back half of the doubleheader, Newman would score in the top of the first with an RBI single from
Hayden VanDePol that would score
Devin Beard. Fort Hays State would even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. The Jets would put up a run in back-to-back innings in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Neither team would score again until the Tigers would put up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game and force extra innings. In the extra frame, with two outs and a runner on first,
Tyler Push would reach on a dropped third strike that the catcher would throw away. This would allow
Zack Hargrove to score from first base and Push to advance all the way to third base. Beard would come up in the ensuing at bat and drive Push in with a single to left field. At this point in the contest, we would be faced with an hour and twelve minute weather delay due to lightning in the area. After play resumed, the Tigers would get the final out of the inning. Fort Hays State would get runners in scoring position, but
Luke Thoreson would be able to avoid the trouble in his second inning of work to give the Jets the 5-3 win in extra innings.
