EDMOND, OK - Newman played co-host Oklahoma Christian and East Central in a pair of matches on Friday at the Broncho Invitational. Match one was a highly contested 5 set thriller in which the Jets found themselves on the wrong end. Later in the day they took the floor against the Tigers of East Central and won 3 sets to one.
Match 1
The Jets were in a back and forth match once again. This time the Eagles of Oklahoma Christian found a way to hand Newman their first loss of the season. Newman won the first and fourth sets 25-19 and 25-23 respectively.
The Eagles took sets two, three and five to secure the win. The Lone Star Conference members hit .251 as a team while the Jets hit .230. The numbers were not overly for the two teams except for the blocks department where the Eagles stuffed the Jets at the tape 8 times. That was twice as many times as the Jets sent the ball back where it came from themselves.
Individually, the Jets had some noteworthy performances, as expected in such a closely played match. 4 Jets tallied double digit kills.
Riley Daugherty led with a top notch 22 kills while also picking up 22 digs. Two is a big trend with her line as she also hit .222.
Imani Jones and
Jada Key each had double digit kills and hit over .400 individually.
Salome Romp ended match one with 13 of her own kills.
Defensively Newman was paced by
Paiton Haga with 30 digs and Daughterty with her aforementioned 22.
Match 2
The Jets turned right around and took on a struggling East Central club who is now 0-6. The Jets moved to 4-1 with their 4 set win. Scores were 25-18, 17-25, 25-2, 25-22. The Jets hit .201 to the Tigers' .101.
Kaylie Kovach stuffed Tigers hitters 8 times in Friday afternoon's contest. That number led all players in the match.
Salome Romp slammed home 22 kills over four sets. Romp also swung .268.
Riley Daugherty had 10 kills and 22 digs.
Paiton Haga had 18 digs herself resulitng in a great day for the Newman libero with 48 digs.
Jenna DeVore finished her day with 90 assists over both the matches.
The Jets will wrap up their tournament play with Western Colorado Saturday at 1 PM in Edmond. Newman opens up conference play in Joplin against Missouri Southern on Friday, September 17.
