Matchup with Lincoln goes down to the wire as Jets fall

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Jets traveled to face MIAA foe Lincoln University Thursday night.  The two squared off in Jason Gym.  Newman fell late 51-50.

Early on it was the Britney Ho show, as the Junior scored 10 first quarter points to lead all scorers.  The Jets jumped out to an early 14-3 lead, but the Tigers settled in as the game played out.  At the half, it was 23-16 advantage Newman as the scoring roll had slowed.
 
In the second half, the Jets continued navigating the game with a lead.  The third quarter went back and forth with marginal scoring runs.  The Blue Tigers cut the Jets lead to just one at the end of the third quarter with Newman leading 33 to 32.
 
There were 3 ties in the 4th quarter leading up to a Blue Tiger corner 3 to give them the lead 49-48 with 1:34 remaining.  This was the Tigers first lead of the entire night.
 
This game went down to the wire.
 
The Jets forced a shot clock violation on the Blue Tigers with just under 20 seconds remaining.  Newman came into their next offensive possession with a chance to take a lead.
 
After a driving miss, Senior Makayla Hayes grabbed the offensive board and netted the put back to put the Jets on top by 1 with 14 seconds remaining.
 
Niyah Jackson of Lincoln drove the right side of the lane getting her layup to fall with 1.6 seconds remaining taking the lead back 51-50.
 
The Jets got a look from three by Makayla Hayes that rimmed out.  The Jets were one shot away from picking up their first conference win on the campaign.
 
Makayla Hayes finished with 9 points and 12 rebounds.  12 rebounds are a new career high for the Neosho native.  Britney Ho finished with 16 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Jets in scoring while freshman Laura Bello added 8 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
 
Newman heads to UCM for their next game.  That contest is set for a 1 PM tip on Saturday, January 15.
