Jets unable to tame the Hillcats

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman finally hosted Rogers State University after two cancellations on the originally scheduled dates of the contest due to COVID-19 protocols within the Hillcat program. The Jets dropped Tuesday night's game 66-53.
 
Newman's first conference win continues to evade the Jets who now sit at 2-15 (0-11 MIAA). Rogers State picks up their second win in a row to advance to 6-11 (2-9 MIAA).
 
The Jets and Hillcats played a fast paced back and forth first half.  It was the Jets turning on the afterburners to go up 7 points when Amoni White swiped the ball from Jordan Lewis and took the ball coast to coast and laid it in.  Newman's lead was cut nearly in half when Jordan Lewis responded with a buzzer beating 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to make the score 18-14.
 
In the second the two continued a back and forth game with the teams trading the lead three times.  Carissa Beck had ten first half points on perfect shooting from the field.  She finished the night with 13 and only one missed field goal on the night.  The Hillcats closed out the opening half with a 6-0 run thanks to two Bailey Kliewer threes.
 
The Jets only got within one point in the second half when Laura Bello put up a transition lay-up thanks to a steal and assist from Amoni White.  In the final frame, Lauryn Dubbert converted the and one fighting through contact for the elbow jumper to bring the Jets within 4 with 4:27 remaining. The Jets conceded a 9-0 run to close out the game, giving the Hillcats a 66-53 win.
 
Lauryn Dubbert led the Jets with 15 points, Carissa Beck followed with 13.  Beck also added 4 rebounds to tie Laura Bello for the team led.  Bello had 12 points off the bench.
 
The Hillcats were led by Bailey Kliewer and Vanessa Gajdosova in scoring who had 18 and 16 points respectively.
 
Up next for Newman is a visit from Missouri Western on Thursday.  Tipoff for the single game is slated for 5:30 PM in Fugate Gymnasium.
