Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Battered Jets team gives the Bearcats all they can handle

WICHITA, Kan. - Newman finished off their stretch of three games at home with a strong battle against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats.  Down 3 starters due to various reasons, the Jets looked deep down the bench and got effort.  The Jets, however, ultimately fell 54-42.

The day began with Newman setting the pace.  The Jets worked diligently to slow the game down.  It worked tremendously.  Newman held the Bearcats scoreless until 2:15 in the 1st quarter.  The Jets began the game with a 6-0 scoring run.  The Bearcats responded with an 8-0 run to take a 2 point lead into the quarter break.

The Jets trailed by 11 at the half.  But Coach Drew Johnson and his team were not out of this one.  The Jets closed the third and began the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run capped by two three's from Carissa Beck and Lauryn Dubbert to close the Bearcat lead to just one at 41-40.  The Jets were unable to contain that momentum and suffered the defeat 54-42.

Two players saw their first starts of the season and performed.  Riley Rottinghaus scored 6 points in her first ever start while Torri Vang scored a bucket and led the team with 7 rebounds.

Three Jets led the scoring for Newman with 10 points each.  Carissa Beck, Lauryn Dubbert and Laura Bello carried the offense torch.

Coach Drew Johnson was encouraged by his team's effort and performance as a unit that has a ton of moving pieces in 2021-22.

The Jets are off to face some in state MIAA opponents next week beginning with a trip to Topeka.  Newman will take on Washburn Wednesday, January 26th at 5:30 PM.
