Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jets closed out at home

WICHITA, Kan. – Newman hosted Northeastern State Saturday afternoon in Fugate Gymnasium.  The Jets played Saturday against the RiverHawks which was Newman's first home contest for Women's Basketball in 2022.  The Jets battled but could not bring the game close enough as the game closed, falling 67-57.

The MIAA has brought many challenges to Drew Johnson's squad, but none have ever been one that they will never overcome.  Sitting at 2-12 (0-8 MIAA), the squad will look to let to this loss go and shift its focus to Monday night's reschedule of the matchup versus the Rogers State Hillcats.  The RiverHawks picked up their first conference win advancing their record to 3-9 (1-5 MIAA).

A key difference in Saturday's game was the shooting from the field.  Newman's 18-54 day and just 2-12 from 3 (16.7%) kept the Jets from making the RiverHawks sweat in the closing minute.  The Jets continually kept the game with 3 possessions, the buckets just were not dropping for a team so hungry for their first win in conference.  NSU was helped by 7-17 (41.2%) behind the arc.  That shooting is what helped the RiverHawks take a 5 point lead into the half that they ultimately would not concede.

Newman was driven offensively by Tiffany Dortland who took over, scoring 19 points.  Junior Guard Amoni White netted 12 with 8 coming at the charity stripe.  White was tenacious in her efforts to keep playing downhill basketball getting to the line for 9 freebies.  Britney Ho led all forwards for Newman with 10 points.

The Jets were boosted by Lauryn Dubbert off the bench.  35 massive minutes helped keep the Jets in the game when foul trouble kept others from the floor.  Dubbert scored 7 points with 4 assists, 4 boards and 2 steals.

Up next for the Jets is that rescheduled date with the Hillcats for Monday, January 10th.  Rogers State will come to a rowdy Fugate Gymnasium with students returning from the holiday break.  Monday is also the first day of classes for Newman students.  Tipoff is slated for 6 PM.
