EDMOND, Okla. – Newman Volleyball wrapped up their long road trip with a Tuesday night matchup against the #24 Central Oklahoma Bronchos.
The Jets have struggled as of late getting off to a good start in the first set but that looked better tonight as the first set was a teeter totter early on with neither team able to get the upper hand until UCO scrapped together a 4-0 run to make it a 13-10 lead that they didn't lose the rest of the set. The Bronchos took set 1 25-20 as
Salome Romp,
Riley Daugherty and Hannah Bristol each had 2 kills in the set.
Set 2 was a similar back and forth pace with the Jets getting a lead as big as 3 (12-9) before #24 UCO went on another 4-0 run to take back the lead that they didn't return the rest of the way. Newman clawed their way back to a 4-1 run that saw the set get as close as 22-20 but UCO finished on a 3-1 run that put them up 2 sets to 0.
Newman found a spark in set 3 and showed the team that we've seen earlier in the season. With their backs against the wall and down 24-20, the Jets dug deep and went on a 6-1 run that caught the Bronchos off guard as Romp, Ajekwu, and Brisco each had kills along with UCO attack errors to give Newman an opportunity to steal a set from the nationally ranked Bronchos. After going back and forth in a fun and exciting third set, it was ultimately UCO that came out on top as Mallorie Koehn had the set and match winning kill.
The Jets were outhit .224 to .137 on the night.
Abby Borough led the Jets with 8 kills.
Mckinzie Weaver had 28 assists and
Natalie Morales had 20 digs.
Newman (7-12, 2-8) returns home this Saturday as Northwest Missouri State (12-4, 6-2) comes to Fugate Gymnasium for a matchup set for 3 PM.
