Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Newman offense slowed in 1-0 loss to RSU

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Jets Men's soccer team took a short trip to Oklahoma on Thursday to take on the Rogers State Hillcats in a slow and grueling match that saw both teams struggle to get anything going early on. Despite an even first half, the Jets would be out shot in the second half and end up letting one of those shots through, taking a 1-0 loss and moving to an 0-11-1 record on the season.

First half

Neither team was able to really get any offense going this half with both teams only getting a combined total of 7 shots off. An early run in the second minute by Senior Joao Moreira set up Newman's first chance of the game with a cross that was pushed back out by RSU. 9 minutes later the Jets found themselves at risk with RSU fighting in the box to try and score, but Newman was able to clear the ball away to avoid falling behind.

Senior Matthew Roberts found the Jets next opportunity in the 29th minute with a shot in the middle of the box, but Newman had to fall back on defense after RSU cleared it out to begin a run downfield. After a long throw in sent the ball bouncing in front of the Jets goal 3 minutes later, Sophomore keeper Juan Carlos Cordova would snatch the ball away, keeping RSU out of the goal again. Both teams would finish the half scoreless and looking to get some better attacking runs going in the second half.

Second half

The second half would start off very different from the first, with RSU being a lot more aggressive. Newman was forced to deal with a lot of early pressure as RSU let a shot off just 15 seconds into the half and forced a pair of corner kicks 5 minutes later. The Jets would attempt to get some offense of their own in as they saw some good runs starting in the 54th minute. It was RSU who would find the net first though, as Trindon Turner put a header high center to give them the 1-0 lead.

Newman would attempt to get right back in the game with a shot from Moreira shortly after the kickoff, but would end up back downfield defending again after a long pass sent RSU back in the box for another shot. A great pair of saves from Cordova in the 67th and 69th minute kept the Jets in the game, but after another 21 minutes of play, RSU would come out on top 1-0.

Next Up
