WAYNE, Neb. - The Jets began their season with a trip to Nebraska to take on the Wayne State College Wildcats. Newman would be looking to get a win against them after losing all three of their previous matchups, and despite a second half comeback where they would outscore the Wildcats, it wouldn't be enough to overcome a a rough start to the game in the first quarter.
WSC would jump out to a 27-14 lead in that quarter as the Jets turned the ball over 13 times and were only able to get nine shots up compared to the Wildcats 21.
After that however, Newman would tighten up and start to even things out as both teams put up 20 points each in the second. Lauryn Dubbert helped bring the team forward after going 8 for 8 on her free throws and leading the team going into halftime with 11 points and grabbing seven boards.
The third quarter would see Newman start to slowly mount a comeback after being down 13 at halftime. Dubbert and Britney Ho went to work on the offensive side while the Jets held the Wildcats scoreless from three to keep them at bay.
The start of the fourth quarter saw Newman continue to climb their way back, with the Jets knocking the Wildcats lead down to just five after back to back possessions ending in free throws for Maddie Spagnola. Despite outscoring them again this quarter, it wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit created at the start of the game, with WSC taking the win 99-90.
Lauryn Dubbert would lead the team in scoring, shooting 4/5 from three and hitting 100% of her free throws while also grabbing a team high eight rebounds and four steals.
Britney Ho wouldn't be far behind, putting up 23 points on 81% shooting from the field and also hitting all her free throws.
Despite being held to 36% shooting, Maddie Spagnola would initiate the Jets offense with seven assists and also reach double digit scoring, putting up 18 points.
The Jets continue their season next Friday , November 18 at 5:30 PM in Edmond, Oklahoma. They'll take on Oklahoma Christian at Hamilton Field house before following up against Missouri S&T the next day.
