Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ho’s 2nd half takeover leads Newman to MIAA opening victory

Newman snaps 21 game road losing streak

It was the beginning of December and MIAA play for Women's Basketball as they started their 2 game road trip of Missouri with a stop in Jefferson City to take on Lincoln University. The Jets rolled in coming off a record breaking night on Monday where they routed Manhattan Christian by 91 points and broke 5 team records and 1 individual record and was poised to carry over that Monday night win to Thursday where they met a 1-4 Lincoln team who looked to extend the Jets road losing streak to 22 games dating back to 2020.

That streak would be snapped tonight as it took overtime for the Jets to overcome a gritty Lincoln squad, 74-67.

Neither the Jets nor the Blue Tigers could pull away early as Newman got out to a 15-14 lead after the first quarter. Maddie Spagnola and Lauryn Dubbert added 6 of the Jets 15 with a three pointer each.

Newman and Lincoln went into the half at 35-34 as NU couldn't shake off the pesky Blue Tigers who caused 24 turnovers leading to 26 points in the 5 quarters of play.

The Jets were able to overcome the turnover deficit with Britney Ho coming alive in the 2nd half, scoring 11 of Newman's 18 points in the 3rd quarter and topping her 3rd quarter play off with a buzzer beater that gave NU a 1 point lead heading to the 4th.

Britney wasn't done yet and neither was Lincoln as Ho's lone 3 point went in and gave Newman a 6 point lead with 5:21 left to play but the Blue Tigers went on an 8-0 run to take back the lead.

The Jets tied it back up with 41 seconds to go off a Britney Ho layup and had an opportunity to take the lead with the last shot but a questionable offensive foul by Newman led to LU having the final shot but a good defensive possession by the Jets gave Lincoln no time to get a final shot off.

Lauryn Dubbert had 9 points off 3 three pointers and her biggest one came in overtime to put Newman up 67-64 and Carissa Beck followed Dubbert's lead a few possessions later and drained a 3 from the corner to silence the Blue Tiger crowd and put out the flames of a Lincoln team that tried heating up after a technical foul by Newman. Beck would score 2 free throws before Maddie Spagnola's free throws put Lincoln away and gave the Jets the MIAA opener victory and their first MIAA opener victory since the 2020-21 Covid season.

Britney Ho led the way with 22 points. Carissa Beck finished with 12 points and tied Ho with 8 rebounds. Maddie Spagnola controlled the Newman offense with 6 assists.

Newman 4-2 (1-0) ends the 21 game road losing streak and extends their win streak to 3 heading into Central Missouri this Saturday.
