Charity Stripe Disparity Aids NSU in Second Half Surge

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Newman embarked on its final road trip of the 2021-22 campaign with a trip to Northeastern State.  The Jets and Riverhawks battled to a 64-57 final score.

Newman falls to 2-23 (0-19 MIAA) with the tough loss.  NSU is now 6-19 (4-15 MIAA) after an efficient second half.

The first 16 minutes of the game was all Newman.  Britney Ho had 8 first quarter points and helped the Jets grow their lead to as many as 13 points.

The Riverhawks used scoring runs and free throws to close in on the Jets and ultimately take the lead after 3 quarters.  NSU closed the first half with a 12-2 run to cut the Jets' lead down to just 21-19.

Newman held the lead for all but 15 seconds until 3:10 remaining in the third quarter.  The Jets conceded their lead on a Megan Lee three pointer before Sydney Nilles responded with a three-pointer of her own to reclaim the lead 31-29 with 4:30 to go in the third.  After three, however, the Jets trailed 43-36.

In the fourth, Newman used a 6-0 run to cut the Riverhawks' lead to three, 48-45, at the final media timeout with 4:49 to go in the game.  Britney Ho capped off the run with a pair of free throws just before the media timeout.

NSU used free throws to close out a 64-57 victory over Drew Johnson's team.

Britney Ho finished with 12 points and 9 rebounds.  Tiffany Dortland added 12 points as well with 5 boards and three assists.  Newman assisted on 16 of their 20 made field goals.

Sydney Nilles marked her best conference scoring output with 8 points.

A whopping 32 fouls were whistled against the Jets, compared to the Riverhawks 18 fouls committed.  NSU shot 32 of their 38 free throw attempts in the second half, while Newman only attempted 18.  The charity disparity at the stripe definitely helped NSU who shot 28.8% from the field to Newman's 39.2%.

Newman is back in action Saturday as they head to Rogers State.  Tipoff is slated for 1:30 PM in Claremore.
