Softball drops a pair in Wayne

WAYNE, Neb. – Newman finally play some softball after changing dates 4 times and locations one time.  The Jets made their way north to Wayne, Nebraska to face Wayne State College and Concordia-St. Paul for a game each.

Game 1:

Newman and the Wildcats played an early morning contest at WSC's home field.  The Wildcats used their home field advantage to compete their way to a 9-3 win over Newman.

Wayne State knocked Newman starter, Janine Gutierrez, out of the game after just 1.1 innings.  Madison Dewitt threw 4.2 innings out of the pen with three strikeouts and just one earned run allowed.

Newman scored 3 runs on 8 hits, but stranded 11 runners.  The Jets' lack of clutch hitting hampered their comeback chances after being down 7-1 after two innings.

Game 2:

Concordia-St. Paul and the Jets played both baseball and softball.  As baseball split, it was CSP who had the upper hand in softball, with their walk off win.  The Bears took the game 5-4.

Both teams used big innings for the bulk of their run scoring.  After trailing 1-0 after 4 innings of play, the Jets erupted for a 4 spot with 3 RBI singles.  Gianna Navarro got the party started with hers, followed by Lindsay Mayo's 2 RBI single.  The run scoring concluded with Madison Canez' RBI single scoring Navarro.

Madison Dewitt was assigned the loss as the Bears walked it off in the bottom of the seventh.  Dewitt is now 0-2 and has been unlucky with those results as she has suffered defeats by walk off twice.

Up next for the Jets is tournament play in Topeka.  The Jets will have four games Friday and Saturday against four different NSIC opponents.  For more information, stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
