WICHITA, Kan. - Newman hosted #22 Nebraska Kearney Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled 40 minutes and it was the Lopers escaping with a 7 point, 62-55 victory.
Newman has dropped 17 in a row and remains winless in MIAA action. The Jets sit at 2-21 (0-17 MIAA), while UNK advances to 17-5 (12-4 MIAA) with their win in Wichita.
The Jets fell behind early conceding 6 second chance points before the first whistle. The Lopers stretched their lead to 20-7 after the opening 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Newman came whizzing back with a 19-6 advantage in second quarter offensive production. An 8-0 run over the final 2:56 of the first half, capped off by a
Carissa Beck corner 3, allowed the Jets to tie the Lopers at 26 heading into the break.
The second half was an entertaining 20 minutes.
Tiffany Dortland hit a jumper to give the Jets a 30-29 lead, but the lead was short lived as Klaire Kirsch responded with a fastbreak layup to put the Lopers back in control of the game. The two teams traded the lead and buckets once more before the Lopers took the lead, never to surrender it again.
The Lopers led by as many as 13 in the final frame. Newman was not down and out just yet. At 1:51,
Britney Ho kicked the ball out to
Lauryn Dubbert at the top of the key where she buried a three pointer to cut the Loper lead to just 56-53. The Lopers made their free throws and took the Jets out with a 62-55 victory on their way out of Fugate.
Britney Ho led Newman scorers with 12 points and managed to lead the team with 8 rebounds as well.
Laura Bello assisted Ho by bruising the Lopers in the paint with 11 points and 5 rebounds herself off the bench. Newman had just 6 scorers on the night.
Carissa Beck added 9 points, while
Tiffany Dortland and
Torri Vang added 8 a piece. Bello was joined off the bench by
Lauryn Dubbert who poured in 7.
Newman will get a week to work things out before a visit from UCO on Saturday, February 12th to Fugate Gymnasium.
