WICHITA, Kan. – A quick turnaround Saturday to Sunday may have been exactly what the Newman softball team was needing. After being swept Saturday, the Jets salvaged a split against another in state opponent in Emporia State. In game one, the Jets came one run shy of a 7 run comeback. On the back end of the double the Jets escaped with a one run victory on the back of big at bats up and down the lineup.
Game 1 Final: Newman 7 Emporia State 8
Game 2 Final: Newman 10 Emporia State 9
The Jets are now 6-10 (1-3 MIAA) after earning the hard fought game two win. Emporia State sits at 12-12 (1-3 MIAA) after nearly losing a lead for a win and nearly coming all the way back in a loss.
Game 1:
The Jets went up 1-0 as
Lindsay Mayo crushed a solo shot that got out quicker than it got to the plate it seemed. That rocket was the only offense the Jets could find early on, however.
Emporia State used a run in the second and a massive 7-run third inning to get into cruise control.
The offense seemed to figure something out in the bottom half of the seventh as the Jets put up 6 runs, just one shy of completing the comeback.
One thing preached across all softball teams is putting pressure on the defense by getting balls in play and then pressuring the pitcher with having runners on. The Jets did that nearly perfectly in the bottom half of the 7
th as the Jets scored 6 runs, 4 of which were unearned.
This inning, although not enough for game one, sparked a little life into the home dugout heading into game 2.
Game 2:
Newman kept their momentum rolling as pitcher,
Megan Walz picked up her third win on the season as she tossed 5 innings of 6 hit 5 earned run ball while dishing three tickets back to the dugout.
The Jets bounced ESU starter, Vanackere after just a third of an inning and tagged the Hornet pitcher for 4 hits and 6 runs to send her away with her first loss on the season. The big inning saw 11 Jets step up to the plate.
All nine Newman hitters reached base via a hit at least once in Game 2. It was much needed as the Jets conceded a 4 spot in the second and a 5 spot in the sixth.
The Jets added a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings to ensure the lead was never lost.
Up next, the Jets will face off against Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday. The double header is slated to begin at 3 PM.
