WICHITA, Kan. – After a weekend of conference games, the Jets opened their play up to a non-conference doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist on Tuesday. The Jets dropped both games, the first 8-1 and the second 6-3 in 8 innings.
Newman is now 6-12 while Oklahoma Baptist is now 16-9 after picking up the sweep.
Game 1:
Strikeouts dominated game one for Newman. The Jets' offense was off balance in their attack and chased many pitches that Newman hitters typically remain disciplined on. Newman was struck out 12 times, including 11 times in the first 5 innings.
In the circle, pitchers
Madison Dewitt and
Anna Veltien were taken for 11 hits. The momentum was distinctly on the Bison's side as they their pitching shut down the Newman offense aside from the top of the first when an unearned run was scored.
Game 2:
Newman turned in a good performance offensively in the middle inning of game two. The Jets recovered from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth inning as
Samantha Gutierrez crushed a two-run blast to bring the game even.
The Jets took the lead on an error by the Bison in the 5
th, but frustratingly enough, the inning ended with the bases left loaded.
The Bison drew the game even with an RBI single in the 6
th.
In extra innings, the Bison scored 3 unearned runs in the top of the 8
th taking any wind out of the Jets' sails. The Jets came up in the bottom of the 8
th and struck out three times with one walk.
