ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. – Newman and Central Missouri played their opening game of the weekend in Arkansas City at Tiger Ball Park as the Jets and Mules were forced to move the series south due to snowfall the night before. Cowley County Community College agreed to let the Jets and Mules use the artificial surface at Tiger Ball Park. UCM came out swinging as the Mules hung 19 hits on Newman pitching.

The Jets hold a 14-10 (4-7 MIAA) mark following the loss. UCM is yet to concede an MIAA game as they are now 11-0 in the conference and 17-3 overall.
Garrett VanDeventer toed the rubber for the Jets in game one. VanDeventer was around the zone early. The Ark City native embraced a bend don't break style as the Mules had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings. VanDeventer worked his way out of the jams unscathed hoping the offense could come through.
The Mule offense came alive in the middle innings putting up 3 runs, 4 runs, 1 run and finishing off the Jets with a 5 spot in the top of the 7
th. VanDeventer left the game yielding 12 hits and 6 runs while striking out three.
On the other side, UCM rolled out Collin Jones who worked ahead in the count all day and gave Newman hitters fits all afternoon. Jones tossed a complete game giving up just two hits and striking out 8.
The unsuccessful day for the Jets at the plate was a disheartening statistic as the game was 0-0 heading into the top of the fourth. The momentum was all Mules as Newman could not respond to the big innings by UCM.
Up next the Jets and Mules will play a double header Saturday afternoon as the two teams will complete their series in Arkansas City. First pitch will be at 1 PM with game 2 to follow.
