WICHITA – Newman welcomed Southern Nazarene to town for a doubleheader Tuesday. The Jets and Storm traded 8-run wins to split the day.
Game 1 Final: SNU 12 Newman 4
Game 2 Final/5: SNU 0 Newman 8
The Jets are now 14-22 after splitting the nonconference midweek. Southern Nazarene's day was par for the course as the team still sits at .500 with a 20-20 record.
Game 1:
The Jets were looking good leading 4-0 through 5 innings. The Jets got 3 runs in the third inning off of a two RBI double by
Anissa Ramos followed up by an RBI single by
Samantha Gutierrez.
Lauren Kwak added another with her own RBI double.
Through 5 innings starting pitcher,
Madison Dewitt was dealing. The pitcher had held the Storm scoreless. In the sixth back-to-back homeruns and a walk bounced Dewitt from the game. Dewitt was relieved by
Anna Veltien who could not get out of the inning.
Janine Gutierrez finished the inning, but not before SNU tagged the Jets for 10 runs.
SNU went on to win 12-4.
Game 2:
The Newman offense maintained its strong showing on the day, string hit after hit together.
In the circle,
Megan Walz held the Storm to just one hit over 5 innings as the Jets won the game 8-0 in 5 innings. Walz tossed the complete game shutout on just 67 pitches while punching out 5 Storm hitters.
The game was clinched by the 7-8-9 hitters in game two, as
Taylor Ullery reached base before
Lauren Kuhrt tripled her home. The eighth and game clinching run was scored on a bunt by
Mackenzie Anderson.
This weekend, the Jets will host #2 Rogers State on Friday and will honor their seniors on Saturday before the games against Northeastern State.
