Jets WALK it off against #2 Rogers State

The Jets knocked off the nationally ranked RSU Hillcats in game two of their double header Friday evening

WICHITA – The Jets knocked off #2 Rogers State in game two of their double header in 8 innings by a score of 3-2.  Madison Canez was disciplined with 4 stone cold takes to walk it off with a base on balls.  The Jets and Hillcats split the series on the day, much to the disdain of the supporters from Claremore.

Game 1 Final: #2 RSU 3 Newman 0
Game 2 Final/8: #2 RSU 2 Newman 3

Newman is now 15-23 (6-10 MIAA) after the massive upset victory in game two.  #2 Rogers State will see themselves fall in the rankings as their previously unblemished conference record falls to 15-1 in the MIAA and 36-4 overall.

Game 1:

RSU got all they needed in game one when a mistake by Newman starter Madison Dewitt was crushed over the wall to center field by Elexis Watson.  Watson went fairly quiet the rest of the way despite earning 2 base on balls in game one and two singles in game two.

The Hillcats added a run in the fifth on an RBI walk that did not come without controversy from the previous play.  With the bases loaded, Taylor Ullery threw a Hillcat runner out at the plate on a single to right field.

The controversy lies in there being no audible call that the runner was out at the plate on the initial tag.  The ball was then thrown to the shortstop to catch the runner advancing to third.  The runner who was ultimately out at home faked as if she was trying score, again unsuccessfully as it drew a throw home.  This resulted in RSU advancing to third safely to set up bases loaded for the walk.

Madison Dewitt finished her day with 7 innings pitched on 6 hits and 3 runs allowed.  The sophomore struck out 5 Hillcats in the losing effort.

Game 2:

After being held to just two hits in game one, the Newman offense had something to prove in game two.

The Jets jumped on the Hillcats early as Anissa Ramos crushed a ball off the left field wall for an RBI double to put the Jets ahead.  Newman added one more in the third as Lindsay Mayo singled home Mackenzie Anderson.

Rogers State tied it up in the fifth with a two run blast that took the wind out of the Jets' sails.  Newman's starting pitcher, Megan Walz responded.  Despite giving up those two runs the lefty rolled three straight ground balls to get the Jets back on offense.

After no runs in the bottom of the fifth, Walz again tossed three infield outs in the sixth.

The Jets escaped trouble in the seventh as a pinch runner was caught stealing in between first and second by a brilliant back pick from catcher Samantha Gutierrez.

Walz stranded RSU's near go ahead run at third in the top of the eighth, making way for the Jets to capitalize on stolen momentum.

Walz's day finished with 8 innings pitched, 6 hits allowed, 2 runs, no walks and no strikeouts.  The Jets committed zero errors while recording 24 putouts as a team.

The Jets struck early in the eighth, getting a single off the Hillcats' starter.  Hilman was pulled in lieu of Andrea Morales, a 21 win pitcher on the season, who just beat the Jets in game one.

Morales allowed a single herself before plunking Anissa Ramos to load the bases.  Morales got a quick strikeout to bring Madison Canez up to the plate.  Canez was decisive in her swings and watched 4 near misses go by and earned the game winning RBI on the fourth pitch as the third run of the game for the Jets was walked in.

This weekend, the Jets will honor their four seniors on Saturday before the games against Northeastern State.  The Senior Day Ceremonies for Mackenzie Anderson, Anna Veltien, Taylor Ullery and Lauren Kuhrt will take place prior to first pitch at 11:45.
