Jets squeeze out a Sunday Victory in Maryville

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Newman and Northwest Missouri State finished their series Sunday afternoon.  The Jets looked to salvage the series finale to avoid the sweep and maintain their spot in the conference rankings.  The Jets emerged victorious with a 3-2 grind it out win.

Final Newman 3 Northwest Missouri State 2

Newman is now 18-15 (8-12 MIAA) with the Sunday W.  Northwest Missouri State drops to 11-20 (7-13 MIAA) after dropping the game.

Newman pitching came out and gave it everything they had.  Asher Finke, Ian Lecki and Connor Langrell battled all afternoon.  Despite striking out just three batters all afternoon, the trio secured the victory for the Jets by holding Bearcat hitters to just 6 hits.

Finke went 5 innings and picked up his sixth win on the season.  He exited with a line of 2 strikeouts, 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned, and 7 walks.  Lecki locked it down, holding Northwest to just 2 hits with a strikeout over three frames.  Langrell picked up save number 7 on the campaign.

The scoring got started for the Jets with a squeeze play executed perfectly by Hayden VanDePol scoring Zack Stewart in the fourth.

Newman came back in the fifth and manufactured two more runs as Stewart hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Jacob Butash, followed by an RBI single by Jenner Steele.  Steele's single scored Tyler Push and the RBI was the first baseman's team leading 40th.

The Bearcats would not go down quietly as they answered back in the fifth, with sacrifice fly and a run scored on a wild pitch.

4 combined shutout innings by Ian Lecki and Connor Langrell were what was needed to secured the win.  Langrell closed the game out in the ninth stranding a double and a walk allowed earlier in that inning.

Up next, Newman heads up I-35 for a series with Emporia State Friday through Sunday.  For more information, stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
