JOPLIN, Mo. – Newman and Missouri Southern played a pair of tightly contested games on Saturday in Joplin. The two teams needed 19 total innings including 12 in game two to decide the series. MSSU took both games by just a run each and needed a walk off in game two to rid of the Jets.

Newman is now 18-28 (9-15 MIAA) with the pair of heartbreaking one run losses. The Lions are now 26-21 (14-10 MIAA).
Game 1:
Newman out hit Missouri Southern 7 to 2 in game one. The hits did not always lead to runs which hampered the Jets.
The Jets got a run scored by
Mackenzie Anderson on an RBI single in the third to put Newman up 1-0.
In the circle,
Madison Dewitt went the distance, 6 innings. Dewitt's day was blemished by just two hits, one of which being the most devastating in the fifth.
The Lions needed just two runs off of a double in that fifth inning.
The game ended with two runners in scoring position for the Jets that would have served as the game tying and game winning runs if they scored.
Game 2:
Megan Walz went a team best 10.1 innings and received a no decision in game two.
The Jets scored two runs off of
Samantha Gutierrez's RBI double and
Gianna Navarro's RBI single to take a two to one lead in the third.
The Lions evened the game at two in the sixth on an error, but Newman responded with a run of their own off of an error.
In the home half of the seventh Southern put on a bunt single to tie the game at three.
The score remained the same until the twelfth when Missouri Southern scored an unearned run off of a pitch ruled a passed ball in the bottom of the twelfth.
Up next, Newman will head to Pittsburg State for their final road contest of the season.
