WICHITA – Newman hosted Cottey College on Tuesday afternoon for a nonconference matchup. The Jets faced a Comet team that competed each pitch and did not back down. The Jets emerged victorious in both games earning their second consecutive home sweep. Their last one came on March 26
th as the Jets pummeled the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri.
Game 1 Final Cottey 3 Newman 4
Game 2 Final Cottey 1 Newman 5
Newman picked up wins 10 and 11 this year with the sweep and is now 11-19 (3-7 MIAA) on the season. Cottey College falls to 19-13 with the pair of losses.
Game 1:
Lindsay Mayo singled home
Laurie Cooke in the first to get things rolling. Two batters later, Mayo turned the Jets on as
Anissa Ramos crushed a triple to left field to put the Jets up 2-0.
Cottey got an unearned run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the inning, Laurn Kwak had enough of that and sent a big fly out to left center scoring 2 runs and giving Newman a 4-1 lead.
The four runs is exactly what Newman needed as Cottey bumped starter
Madison Dewitt from the game after 4.2 innings when they scored off an RBI double.
Dewitt was relieved by
Anna Veltien. Veltien faced the bases loaded with nobody out and struck out back to back Comet hitters before walking in a run. With the game 4-3 and clinging to a one run lead, Veltien induced a fly ball to center field that was hauled in by
Lauren Kuhrt to seal the game.
Veltien earned her first and team's first save of 2022, while Dewitt earned her second win of the season.
Game 2:
Megan Walz pulled off a career day as she tossed a complete game yielding just 3 hits and allowing 1 run while sitting down a career high 7 via the strikeout.
The offense was supplied and catalyzed by
Lindsay Mayo who crushed a 2-run blast over the scoreboard in right center in the home half of the first inning.
Newman scored a pair of runs in the 3
rd inning by a
Gianna Navarro single and an
Anissa Ramos sacrifice fly.
Taylor Ullery singled home a run in the 6
th to pad the lead.
Cottey got an RBI ground out in the seventh, but that was the extent of the dents in
Megan Walz' armor in the circle.
Up next for the Jets is an important MIAA weekend at Central Missouri and Lincoln. The Jets currently hold the 9
th spot in the conference and are just 3 games back from the eighth spot. For more information, stay tuned to newmanjets.com.
