Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball takes a set from #8 Nebraska Kearney in 4 set loss

KEARNEY, NE. – The Newman Jets Volleyball team traveled to Kearney, Nebraska for a chance to upset the #8 Lopers in their first head to head matchup of the season. Both teams came into today's match coming off 5 set losses and looked to turn the page and start the weekend off with a win.

The first set was dominated by Nebraska Kearney after a close set at 8-8 saw the Lopers finish the set with a 17-5 run. Newman looked to pick themselves up and tie the game at a set a piece.

Set 2 saw Newman answer the call as the Jets took off and put up a 7-0 run to take a commanding 17-10 lead that took Nebraska Kearney off their feet as the Jets ran the set 25-20 and tied the match at 1-1. Ashton George had back to back service aces for Newman while kills by Lily Hilgenfeld and Riley Daugherty helped keep the momentum on the Jets side the entire set. NU used the Lopers attack errors to their advantage as back to back attack errors gave the Jets the set 2 victory.

Nebraska Kearney showed why they were the #8 team in the country as a 5-0 and a 4-0 run was the deciding factor in the third set. Newman kept it close after finding themselves down 18-13, getting as close as 21-18 but errors by the Jets and a Lexi Stephens service ace gave the Lopers a set 4 win.

In the 4th and what would be final set, Nebraska Kearney jumped out to a 13-2 lead and rode that wave to a 25-15 set and match victory. Newman tried to mount a comeback with a 4-0 run but that was stopped in its tracks as the Lopers quickly rebounded and ended the match off of an Emersen Cyza kill.

Abby Borough, Riley Daugherty, and Ozioma Ajekwu finished the match with double digit kills.

The Jets are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on MIAA foe Fort Hays State in a matchup set for 2 PM.
