Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer drops game 2-0 to FHSU

WICHITA – The Jets Women's soccer team returned to Wilkins field Friday night to host an undefeated Fort Hays State Tigers team. Despite the shot differential, Newman would show themselves to be a tough opponent for the challenging Tigers as they controlled the ball well in the midfield. FHSU would end up with the win however, as after a free kick and a penalty gave them two opportunities to capitalize on, they would take the game 2-0.

First Half
The game began rough as FHSU rang off 8 shots in the first 24 minutes of play, with Newman sprinkling in some attacking runs of their own and Freshman Maylani Birckbichler getting a shot off. In the final 21 minutes of play, there was much more back and forth action as the Jets found their footing and were able to create some forward momentum, resulting in a corner kick 40 minutes in and another shot before the end of the half in the 42nd minute.

With no goals scored this half, the key players for both teams were found in the midfield. Sophomore midfielder Makenzie Shay had a solid performance, as well as Senior defender Maria Stephens, who played much further up the field than usual in an attempt to drive the Jets downfield and create some opportunities to score.

Second Half
The second half would play out similar to the first, with the main differences being in how FHSU was able to capitalize on foul opportunities. Both teams came out aggressive, but 6 minutes in when they were fouled near midfield, FHSU's Britney Arneson was able to punch one in after a free kick taken by Reilly Madden. The Jets wouldn't back down after this though, as the next 17 minutes saw some aggressive pushes by both teams, but no shot taking opportunities as neither could find their way through the other team's  back line.

FHSU was able to find the back of the net again in the 68th minute after they were fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick opportunity. Hannah Mares took the PK and scored, giving them a 2-0 lead over the Jets. Newman would try their best to fight their way back into the game but were unable to utilize fouling opportunities in the same way. After trying to shake things up with a wave of subs in the 73rd minute and some more attacking pushes, the game ended 2-0 in favor of FHSU.
