Hot shooting lifts PSU past Jets
Pittsburg, KS - Jets headed to their second stop of their road trip to face the Pitt State Gorillas.
The Jets came out hot in the first half, making the first run to make it 12-0. Pitt State battled back to take the lead around the 10 minute mark. After the Jets 12-0 run, Newman was out scored 41-23 in the half. The Gorillas led at the break 41 to 33. Stevie Strong led first half scorers with 12 points.Â
The second half the Jets couldn't stop the Gorillas from three. Pitt State made five threes in the first ten minutes of the 2nd half. Despite the hot shooting from the Gorillas, the Jets kept pushing back and scoring it well.Â
Scoring efforts by Strong, Stevie Smith, and Murphy kept Newman within striking distance, getting it within 15 points with 6 minutes to play. The Jets shot 58% from the three and 69% from the field in the second half. Despite the Jets scoring it well after the break, Newman couldn't put enough defensive stops together to take down the high scoring Gorillas.
The Jets ended with four players in double digit scoring.Â
Stevie Strong led scorers with 24 points going 50% from three. Latik Murphy scored 19 points going 50% from three. Stevie Smith scored 15 points. Thomas Zevgaras scored 10 points and brought in 5 rebounds.Â
Newman is back in action February 2nd at 5:30 pm where they will host the Fort Hays State Tigers.Â
