Box Score WICHITA - Volleyball played a tough and competitive match on Wednesday night, with the Jets showing some of their best offense in conference play.
Northwest Missouri State received several votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll this week and had defeated the Jets in their previous match a month ago. The Jets had other plans and had one of their best starts to a match this season.
The Jets got off to a hot start that they had been looking for all season, scoring the first four of five points in the set.
Ozioma Ajekwu,
Natalie Meyer, and
Makenna Reinert had all been major players in the past several games for the Jets, and would come up huge early in the set to maintain a lead through the set.
The Bearcats crawled back into the match and took the lead, but Newman was intent on getting their first set win of conference play and were relentless on offense.
Coming back from a 13-7 hole, Newman would go on an outstanding run that saw
Avery Dempsey score three service aces to knot the game up at 13.
The game then proceeded to go back and forth, but Meyer had two critical kills that kept the Jets in control. Newman would grow the lead up to almost five, and would go on to win their first set in conference play following a kill from
Olivia Parsley
The second set would be close again, but the Bearcats began to wear down Newman and would take the next three sets. Despite the loss, the Jets have looked much improved over the past several games.
Ajekwu led the Jets in kills with 11, and
Mckinzie Weaver had 17 assists. Dempsey and Meyer would both have a good night as servers with both of them getting three service aces apiece.
The Jets will return home for their third straight home match on Saturday, in a rematch with the Missouri Western Griffons at 3 PM.
