On the Road Again
Newman Women's Basketball heads up to Liberty, Missouri to take on William Jewell on Tuesday in the last road game of non-conference.
Â
Tourney Time
The Jets will host the first ever edition of the Newman Classic in Fugate, involving three other teams. East Central, Upper Iowa and Oklahoma Christian will all compete in the bracketed tournament over two days in Wichita.
Â
Last Time Out
The Jets went 0-2 to start the season in Magnolia, Arkansas, with the losses coming from GAC opposition in Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello. Despite the two losses, the Jets did show glimpses of what could be an exciting season.
Amiya Josey averaged 10.5 points per game this weekend, scoring twelve in her first game and nine in her second.
Valeriya Lioukina had a double-double in both games, getting 10 points and 10 rebounds in each.
Â
Several freshmen also saw some big minutes, as debutantes
Delainey Wylie and
Jaeden McMillin both were involved in the offense. Wylie had 12 rebounds in her first collegiate game, while McMillin had 9 points against UAM on Saturday night.
Â
The game on Saturday was the closer of the two games, but the Jets would be unable to take an advantage through most of the game.

Box Score
Â
Scouting the Squadron
The Jets scored 48 points in both of their games last weekend but were defeated by double digits in both.
Amiya Josey is the team's leading scorer through the first week, which was in part due to her hot hand in her first quarter against Southern Arkansas where she scored 10 points. The Jets have not been able to score many threes, as they were held to just five through the two games. Leading three-point shooter
Carissa Beck was only able to score once on seven attempts.
The Jets also had issues with turnovers, as they had 65 in the two games in Arkansas.
Behind Enemy Lines
The Cardinals of William Jewell are also coming off a 0-2 start of their season, following a long road trip up to Michigan's upper peninsula. The Cardinals lost to Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover, with neither game being all that close.
Guard Ayden Shannon had 23 points in her first game last weekend, as she was the only Cardinal to score in double digits against the Michigan Tech Huskies. She would add 15 against Northern Michigan.
William Jewell is coming off a disappointing 4-26 season and were picked to finish 14
th in the GLVC preseason coaches poll.
Coming off an 11-16 season and a Great American Tournament appearance, East Central has yet to start their season. Their first game will come against Ecclesia College on Tuesday, which will be the only game the Tigers will play before taking on the Jets.
The Tigers lost their leading scorer from last season, Ashlyn Evans-Thompson, to the transfer portal, who averaged 14.5 points per game in her first collegiate season. They do however return Mackenzie Crusoe, who was the team's leading rebounder with 171 boards. Crusoe was also the team's second leading scorer last season.
Â
The Series
The Jets are 4-1 all time against William Jewell, with Newman winning the last two. Between 2011 and 16, the two played each other five times. The Jets are 2-0 all time when playing the Cardinals on their home court.
This will be the fourth all time meeting between the Tigers and Jets, with Newman holding a 2-1 advantage in the series. The Tigers did defeat the navy and red the last time they were in Wichita, defeating Newman 58-43 in one of the opening games of the 2019 season.
Â
Upcoming Attraction
The Jets will play the winner or loser of the Upper Iowa and Oklahoma Christian game on Saturday, pending the result of their first game with East Central. The Jets will then play in their last non-conference game just before Thanksgiving, hosting Manhattan Christian next Tuesday.
