Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball takes on Upper Iowa in Newman Classic

Josey finishes as leading scorer for the second time this season

WICHITA - Women's Basketball hosted their second game of the the Newman Classic, taking on Upper Iowa in the competition's third place game.

The Jets had a narrow loss to East Central to open the tournament, and were looking to rebound for their first win of the season on their home court.

Valeriya Lioukina had a fast start to the game, getting the first four points for Newman.

After going down by several scores, freshman Jaeden McMillin scored five points in under a minute to give the Jets a one point advantage. The quarter would be very close, with the Jets taking a one point advantage after 1.

The second quarter saw an offensive explosion from the Peacocks, who scored 14 points unanswered to open up the second quarter. The Jets would fight back and would only be down by 6 going into the break.

The third quarter saw the Peacocks grow their advantage, but the Jets found themselves getting to the free throw line often, scoring all of their attempts in the third quarter. While they would be getting to the line and not give up many fouls, the scoreline would grow and would be one that the Jets would be unable to get themselves out of.

A 4-0 run to open the 4th quarter would bring the game back down into a single digit advantage, but the Jets would soon fizzle out as the game got further and further out of reach. Upper Iowa would end up taking the third place contest, 64-43.

Amiya Josey would led the Jets in scoring for the second time in five games, scoring 11 points and coming just shy of a double-double, finishing with 8 rebounds. She was the only player this afternoon to score double digits for Newman.

The Jets will have one final non-conference match before MIAA play begins, hosting Manhattan Chrisitan on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
