Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Down to the final shot; Women's Basketball plays in thrilling MIAA opener

Jets host Lincoln in final MIAA meeting

WICHITA - Women's Basketball opened their conference schedule against Lincoln University, in what would be the final time the two teams met in the regular season.

Newman was coming off an extraordinary win against Manhattan Christian, in which the team broke 11 different records over the course of that night.

The game looked like the Blue Tigers would run away early in the first quarter, but the Jets persistence in the paint led them to get multiple opportunities at the free throw line throughout the night.

After another lengthy scoring run for Lincoln, the Jets were able to get within three going into half.

The game was flipped on its head at the start of the third quarter, with Carissa Beck hitting her second three of the evening to make it all square. The Jets would finally take their first lead of the night following several free throws from Beck.

The Blue Tigers would almost go up by 10, but the Jets were able to bring it down to just two near the end of the quarter. However, a three from Lincoln at the buzzer put them up five.

It was all Newman at the beginning of the 4th as they took their largest lead of the night, as Lincoln was unable to score a field goal until the halfway point of the quarter.

The Jets would unfortunately fall into foul trouble, as both Beck and freshman Dani Williams would both foul out. With the two top scorers out of the game, the Tigers capitalized with free throws and hit a dagger into the hearts of Newman fans as they would go on to win by just three.

The Jets had an opportunity at the death to try and take it to overtime, but the shot went just wide as the Jets fell in their first conference game.

Freshmen Williams and Jaeden McMillin both played factors on the offensive side of the ball, as they both hit several clutch shots throughout the night to keep the game very close.

The Jets hit 17 free throws on 25 attempts tonight, with several misses late in the game turning the result around.

Newman will host #3 Central Missouri on Saturday, in what will be the first time the team will face off against ranked opposition this season.
