Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball faces tough test in Pittsburg

Somerhalder has career night with 20 points; goes on 2 long scoring runs

PITTSBURG, KS. - Men's Basketball took on Pittsburg State Thursday night, in a game that saw the Jets struggle to get into gear until the second half.

With a 1-1 conference record last weekend, the Jets were looking to get their first back to back winning streak of the year.

It would not go according to plan in the first half, as the Gorillas started on a 14-2 run to open the game.

Astonishingly, Sam Somerhalder scored the team's first ten points of the game before any other Jet would score a field goal. Somerhalder had the best scoring night of his career in a Newman uniform, getting 10 points in each half.

The Gorillas took a commanding 50-20 lead at the half.

The Jets got back into the swing of things with back to back three pointers from Stevie Smith and Latik Murphy at the beginning of the second half.

Somerhalder again would go on a run of scoring multiple points in a row without anyone else scoring, as he would score 8 in a row in the middle of the period.

The score would look more flattering to the Jets at the end of the game, with a score of 82-66 in favor of the Gorillas, but it would be one that the Jets played second fiddle to at the end of the day.

Somerhalder's 20 points led all scorers in his career scoring day, with only 2 points not coming in his long scoring runs.  Smith had 10 points, with a team high 2 three pointers in the game. Murphy would also add 15 points.

The Jets will head to Missouri Southern on Saturday, hoping to return to their winning ways as they take on the Lions at 3:30 pm.
