Springfield, MO- Men's and Women's Tennis traveled to Springfield, Mo to compete in two matches. On Saturday they took on Drury and Sunday they faced Maryville.
Men's Match 1:
The doubles matches were close, with two of the three resulting in a 6-4 loss. Gustavo Gil and Luca Penteado forced a game 7 but couldn't complete the comeback. Newman lost doubles 0-3, giving Drury 1 point to start the day.
The Jets took two wins in singles. Gil beat his opponent in three sets. Gil rallied back after losing the first set 0-6 and won his next two 6-3 and 6-1.
Penteado fought to win his first set. He won in it in a tie break with a 7-6 victory. His second set showed a more dominant performance taking the win 6-3.
Jarrod Nowak won the first set of his match. The second and third sets were a battle. Nowak battled in the second, but lost 7-5. The last set of Nowak's pushed into extra points, but the final score was 12-10 in favor of Drury.
Newman ended the match losing the day, 2-5.
Women's Match 1:
The Jets battled through doubles. Antonia Ramos and Nicole Bono had a close match, but took the loss 6-4. The Jets couldn't close out a doubles victory, which allowed Drury to start the day with 1 point.
The Jets had singles success, winning 3 matches. Dana Issabayeva dominated in her performance with a 6-4 and 6-3 win.
Ani Zeikidze, playing in the second spot, went into three sets. Zeikidze lost her first set, but battled back with a great performance to win the next two sets 7-6 and 10-8.
Amber Hands also recorded a win with a 6-4 victory in both sets.
The Jets were points away from recording a win on the day. Newman lost the day 4-3.
Men's Match 2:
Newman faced Maryville in their second day in Springfield.
The Jets doubles victories kicked off the day. Isfan Makhmudov and Pedja Kolaric beat their opponent 6-3. Maryville did not have a third doubles team, so the Jets won their second match by default.
Kolaric continued his win streak with a win in his singles match, beating his opponent 6-2 and 6-4.
Gil fought to 3 sets to beat his opponent.
Maryville couldn't fill their #6 singles spot which defaulted a win for Nowak.
Newman ended the day with a 4-3 win.
Women's Match 2:
The Jets started the day off strong with great doubles showings. Newman won 2 of 3 doubles matches, dropping the third one only 6-4. Newman continued that dominance through the singles matches.
Issabayeva won in 2 sets 6-3 and 6-2.
Zeikidze won her first set 6-2. Zeikidze dropped her second set, but fought back in the final set with a 10-8 victory.
Marie Brunet recorded a win with 6-2 in both of her sets.
Hands continued the dominance with a 6-3 win in both sets.
Newman ended the day with a 5-2 victory over Maryville.
Newman Men's and Women's Tennis is back in action February 22nd. The Jets are set to host Bethel College.
