Topeka, Kansas- Newman traveled to Topeka to compete in 3 days of competition. Newman faced Rockhurst on their first day of play.
Newman struggled to get the offense going. The Jets couldn't buy a hit in the first few innings. Laurie Cooke was the first for the Jets to get a hit in the 3rd inning, but no one could hit her in. The Jets went scoreless through 4 innings.
Rockhurst struck first in the 3rd inning, scoring three runs making the score 3-0.
Rockhurst added onto their lead in the 5th inning, scoring 3 more runs. Rockhurst had the lead 6-0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning.
In the bottom of the 5th, an RBI from Alex Schreiner put Kaitlyn Praught across the plate for the Jets, making it 6-1. Rockhurst escaped the inning allowing only one run.
After the 5th inning, the Jets defense held Rockhurst to 0 runs. The Jets tried to battle back in the last few innings, where they put up 2 runs from an RBI by Samantha Gutierrez and a passed ball which allowed Gianna Navarro score.
The Jets were unable to complete the comeback and fell 6-3.
The Jets are back in action February 25th in their second day of tournament play. Newman faces Minnesota Crookston at 11:30 AM and UMary at 5:30pm in Topeka, KS.
