Topeka, KS - The Jets faced Minnesota Crookston and UMary in their second day of the Washburn Tournament.
Game 1: UMC
The Jets were held scoreless through 3 innings. UMC took the early lead with 2 runs in the 1st inning. The Jets finally cut that lead to 1 after a home run from Janine Gutierrez in the top of the 4th inning.
Newman struck again in the top of the 5th with an RBI from Gianna Navarro to hit in Alex Schreiner. With that run, Newman tied it up at 2 all heading into the bottom of the 5th.
UMC answered back in their half inning. UMC scored 3 in the bottom of the 5th taking the lead again , 5-2.
The Jets battled back immediately. In the top of the 6th inning , an RBI from Gianna De Luca Paape hit around Gutierrez making it a 5-3 ball game. UMC found a way out of the inning only giving up one run.
UMC continued their hot offense, and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to extend their lead 7-3.
Newman would be held scoreless in the 7th inning and took the loss 7-3.
Gutierrez went 3-3 with 1 RBI and scoring twice.
Game 2: UMary
The Jets were hot in the first inning. Waggoner kicked it off with a home run to left field. Madi Canez added a double later in the inning which hit in Laurie Cooke. Pitches later, an error by the UMary defense allowed Canez to reach the plate. Newman went into the bottom of the 1st inning with the lead 3-0.
The Jets defense shut down the UMary offense for the first 3 innings of play. Newman struck again in the top of the fourth with a double from Waggoner that scored 2 runs. Canez and Samantha Gutierrez added RBIs in the inning to push their lead 8-0 going into the bottom of the 4th.
UMary finally got their bats going in their half of the 4th and 5th innings. The Marauders scored 3, closing the lead 8-3 heading into the 6th inning.
The 6th inning was huge for the Jets. With bases loaded, Gianna De Luca-Paape walked which allowed Canez to cross the plate. Another fielding error by the Marauders allowed another run to the Jets. Alex Schreiner added an RBI single for another run. The Jets continued to be aggressive at the plate. RBIs from Cooke and Anissa Ramos added 3 more runs for the Jets. Canez capped off the inning with a home run, scoring 3 more runs. UMary finally escaped the inning, but trailed 18-3 going into the bottom of the 6th.
UMary scored only one run in the 6th inning but could not add anymore.
Newman won 18-4.
Waggoner went 2-4 from the plate with 3 RBIs.
Ramos went 3-5 from the plate, adding 2 RBIs.
Canez went 3-4 from the plate, with 5 RBIs and a homer.
