WICHITA - Baseball dropped the series finale vs Rogers State 14-9 on Sunday afternoon.
The Jets had a chance to earn their first sweep of the season and a big one at that vs the No. 21 team in the country, but a 6 run 9th innings put the Hillcats over the Jets.
Rogers State jumped out to a 6-1 lead, with Newman struggling to do anything against RSU's Rece Parker. Parker only let up 1 run through the first 5 innings.
In the bottom of the 6th, things would turn in favor of Newman. The Jets would see 3 different pitchers in the inning. Jace Schneider and
Zack Stewart hit back to back singles and advanced bases on a wild pitch, then
Jack Kiser was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Parker would then be taken out and replaced by Dean Grisham who would walk in 2 runs and be replaced only getting 1 out. He'd strike out the first batter he faced but
Carson Hawks would pick up his teammate and hit a bases clearing double to give Newman their first lead of the game.
The Jets would add another in the 7th inning on an infield hit by
Jake Angelico that would score
Jack Kiser.
RSU tied things up in the top half of the 8th inning on a 2 run home run off pitcher
Andrew Prieve.
Zack Stewart played long ball again in the bottom of the 8th to put the Jets up by 1 with a chance to get the sweep over Rogers. It was his third home run in as many days and 6th on the season.
Rogers State would score 6 runs in the 9th inning. Martinez would double to left field to score 2 runs before a failed pickoff attempt would plate another run. Another 2 run home run made it 13-9 and a sac fly would give the Hillcats their 14th run.
Newman wouldn't get anyone on base in the bottom half and fall to RSU 14-9.
The Jets get the series win after their 2-0 victory on Friday and 14-9 victory yesterday. Newman moves to 19-17 all time vs Rogers State.
NU heads to Durant, Oklahoma on Tuesday to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State before moving to Ada the next day for a 2 PM game vs East Central. They'll wrap up the weekend in Topeka for their MIAA series vs Washburn.
