Lubbock, TX- Newman traveled down to Texas to participate in the Lubbock Christian Tournament. They faced Eastern New Mexico and Southern Nazarene on day 1 of tournament play.
Game 1:
The Jets couldn't quite get the bats rolling fast enough to keep up with the Greyhounds. The top of the first Newman couldn't connect. In the bottom of the first, the Jets gave up a grand slam to make the score 4-0.
The top of the second, the Jets started to connect at the plate. Tori Waggoner lead the inning off with a double to left field. A single by Samantha Gutierrez batted Waggoner in, making the score 4-1.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning the Greyhounds connected again, adding 4 more on to make the score 8-1.
The Jets tried to battle back in the 3rd inning with an RBI from Madi Canez and good base running by Laurie Cooke on defensive errors. The Jets scored 2 to cut the lead to 4.
The next few innings were even. Neither team could get the offense rolling again. Another home run in the bottom of the 5th for the Greyhounds made the game 9-1. Newman tried to get to answer back, but did not score again.
The Jets left 7 on base with 13 hits and 4 runs.
Cooke finished 3- 4 from the plate.
Waggoner finished 4-4.
Game 2:
Newman turned it around for game 2 against Southern Nazarene. The Jets took advantage of costly errors by the Thunder Cats defense.
The Thunder Cats scored first with a home run in the top of the first. Newman answered back as Laurie Cooke crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Torri Waggoner scored on another error by the Thunder Cats defense to tie the game at 2 all.
The 4th inning was all Newman. Cooke with an RBI allowing Kaitlyn Praught to score and Madi Canez with a huge momentum shifting 3-run homerun in the inning helped the Jets take the lead 6-2.
Southern Nazarene tried to make a run in the 5th inning to close the gap. They scored 3 in the top of the 5th to bring them within 1. However, the Jets defense kept the lead alive and took their first win of the season.
The Jets left 9 on base with 11 hits and 6 runs.
Madi Canez hit 1 HR along with 3 RBIs.
Laurie Cooke went 3-3 with 1 RBI.
